About
From the volcanic Aeolian Islands off Sicily. Malvasia and Carricante grown on pumice (pomice in Italian) soils. Saline, mineral, lifted, with stone fruit and herbal complexity. A genuinely unusual wine from a singular place.
Tenuta di Castellaro farms the highest ground on Lipari, about 350 metres above the sea. Three volcanic rocks run through the vineyard. Pumice gives the wine its finesse, obsidian its sharp mineral line, and kaolin its fuller middle. The estate is certified organic.
Bianco Pomice is the house's lead white. The blend runs about sixty per cent Malvasia delle Lipari to forty per cent Carricante. Only the Carricante spends time in barrique, so the perfume stays untouched while the palate picks up weight.
Serve it cool rather than ice cold, so the herbs and stone fruit stay in view. Grilled fish or a plate of shellfish will meet the salt in the wine head on.
Producer note
Tenuta Castellaro is one of the rare quality producers working the volcanic Aeolian Islands.
