About
From small, family-run Te Whare Ra in Renwick. Less of the loud passionfruit, more poise and length. Classic Marlborough fruit, but with restraint.
The fruit for this comes from two places. Te Whare Ra's own vineyard sits on clay loam in Renwick, in the warmer part of the Wairau Valley. Cooler parcels come from further out in the Awatere Valley. The Awatere fruit ripens slower and holds more acid. The home block's wider swing between day and night brings riper, fleshier fruit into the blend.
Most of the fruit ferments in stainless steel, kept clean and direct. A smaller portion ferments in oak, and the blend spends time on lees before bottling. That's where the texture comes from, not fruit concentration alone.
Anna and Jason Flowerday have run Te Whare Ra since 2003. They farm certified organic and biodynamic, on one of Marlborough's oldest vineyard sites, planted in 1979. Serve it well chilled with salads or seafood, and it holds its own next to goat cheese too.
Producer note
Te Whare Ra is a small biodynamic-farming family producer in Marlborough's Wairau Valley.
