About
Cool-climate Adelaide Hills fruit, restrained oak, clean dry finish. The wine to recommend when someone asks for a nice Chardonnay without spending much — Mike Press is the master of value cool-climate.
The fruit comes off the Press family's own vineyard above the Kenton Valley near Lobethal, at 400 to 500 metres. Soils run from sandy loam to clay loam, threaded with quartz, ironstone and schist. Rainfall tops 750 millimetres a year, which the family likes to compare to Bordeaux.
Mike and Judy Press planted the block in 1998 to grow fruit for other producers. They bottle it themselves now and keep the pricing modest on principle. Estate-grown fruit at this level of the shelf is rare, and it is the whole reason the label has a following.
Drink it young and cold. Roast chicken is the obvious match, and it handles fish or a soft cheese just as well.
