About
A clean, finely-judged Chianti Classico — savoury cherry, fresh herbs, fine tannin. Restraint and clarity rather than weight or funk. Drinks well now, rewards a couple of years' cellaring.
Montesecondo sits at Cerbaia in Val di Pesa, 20 hectares of vines at about 150 metres in the Chianti Classico zone. Silvio Messana converted the estate to biodynamics over several years, and the conversion is now complete.
The 2022 blends 80 per cent Sangiovese with 10 per cent each of Canaiolo and Colorino, picked from the oldest vineyards on the farm. Fermentation is spontaneous, with around a month of maceration on skins. The wine then spends twelve months in 500-litre oak casks, far bigger than a standard barrique, so the oak stays in the background.
The estate rates its ageing potential at fifteen years, so there is no rush. On the table it belongs with pasta, steak or a good pizza.
Producer note
Montesecondo is a small Tuscan producer in the Chianti Classico zone.
