About
Girolamo Russo is one of Etna's reference producers. Volcanic-soil Nerello — fine-boned, mineral, complex. The best of modern Sicilian winemaking.
Giuseppe Russo trained as a pianist and took a doctorate in literature before wine claimed him. He came home to run the family vineyards in 2004, and the estate carries his father's name. He learned the craft from neighbours during Etna's revival, and the vineyards are worked organically.
'A Rina means sand in the local dialect, and that is the story of the site. The fruit comes from three contrade on Etna's slopes, San Lorenzo, Feudo and Calderara Sottana, between 650 and 780 metres. The vines stand in sandy volcanic soil, some of them 80 years old and more. Mostly Nerello Mascalese with a little Nerello Cappuccio, raised about a year in large Slavonian oak.
Treat it like Burgundy. Serve it just below room temperature with mushroom pasta or roast chicken.
Producer note
Girolamo Russo is widely regarded as one of Mount Etna's reference producers.
