About
Beerenauslese means hand-picked individually botrytised berries — one of Germany's highest sweetness levels. Intense fruit, electric acidity, long finish. Dr Loosen are one of the most respected modern German Riesling producers.
Botrytis does the heavy lifting here. The fungus shrivels each berry about halfway to a raisin on the vine, concentrating sugar, acid and flavour before pickers lift the fruit by hand. Berries in that state give up only a trickle of juice, which is why wine at this level comes in small bottles and small amounts.
The Loosen estate has stayed in the same family for more than 200 years. The house keeps crops small, fertilises organically and handles the wine as little as possible in the cellar. So the honey and apricot richness rides on genuinely racy acidity, and the finish lands fresh rather than cloying.
Serve it well chilled in small glasses. Blue cheese is the classic match, or pour it alongside a fruit tart. It can also stand alone as dessert.
Producer note
Ernst Loosen took over the family Mosel estate in 1988 and transformed it into one of Germany's leading Riesling producers.
