About

Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc affected by noble rot (botrytis cinerea) — the rot concentrates sugars and creates the signature honey/apricot character. Balanced by acidity so it never cloys. Pairs with savoury richness too — foie gras, blue cheese.

Château Roumieu is a family property in Barsac, handed down since the eighteenth century. The vines grow in Haut-Barsac near the Ciron, the small river whose autumn mists set off noble rot across these vineyards.

Sémillon makes up nearly ninety per cent of the blend, joined by Sauvignon Blanc and a touch of Muscadelle. Harvest happens entirely by hand, and pickers walk the rows several times, taking only the berries the rot has concentrated. That patience is what you are paying for.

Serve it cold in small glasses. You can also cellar it with confidence. Bottles develop dried fruit, spice, and caramel over as long as twenty years.

Producer note

Sauternes is the world's most famous sweet wine appellation, producing botrytised wines from Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
