About
Muscat from the southern Rhône, made in the vin doux naturel style — fresh sweetness lifted by floral, citrus and stone fruit aromatics. Far brighter and lighter than the heavy dessert wine cliché. Served chilled.
Bernardin monks made wine on this land long before it had a famous name. The Castaud family took over in the nineteenth century, and Louis Castaud helped win the appellation its own AOC in 1945. His granddaughter Elizabeth now runs the estate with her husband Andrew Hall and their son Romain, the family oenologist.
The grape is Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. Part-way through fermentation the cellar adds grape spirit, which stops the yeast and keeps the natural grape sugar. Nothing else supplies the sweetness.
Pour it cold with a fruit tart or a soft cheese. The aperitif habit is worth copying too. A small glass before dinner sets the evening up nicely.
