About
Flaxman's Valley is the cool end of the Eden Valley, and at that height the nights stay cold well into harvest. That is what holds the acid in the fruit and keeps this wine taut instead of broad.
Handling is deliberately plain. Whole bunches go straight to press, the juice is cold settled, and the ferment is taken all the way dry before cold stabilising and bottling. No oak goes near it. The result is rounded in the mouth but finishes clean and grapefruity, with real length.
The Steinert family planted this block, and Dave Powell now works it as part of his Neldner Road range. Drink it cold with oysters, fried fish or something properly spicy. Good Eden Valley Riesling also rewards a few years in a dark cupboard.
Producer note
Dave Powell takes this fruit from one old Steinert family block in Flaxman's Valley and bottles it himself. It is the only Riesling in a Neldner Road range otherwise made up of Barossa reds and a single Marsanne.
