About

100% estate-grown Shiraz off McLaren Vale vines averaging 50 years old, fermented in open tanks, hand plunged and matured in French oak hogsheads. The nose is deep and savoury — blackberry, violet, black tea, dried sage and an earthy ferrous edge — while the full-bodied palate runs pepper, cherry, blackberry, plum and cacao over lush tannins and balanced acidity. The cooler 2023 season keeps it graceful rather than heavy, and it will repay a few years in the cellar.

Producer note

Shiraz has been Coriole's principal variety and flagship wine since the family winery's first bottling in 1970. The estate farms organically with a site-driven philosophy focused on understanding the character of each vineyard.

Battle of Bosworth's flagship, made by cordon-cutting the vines so the certified-organic Shiraz dries and concentrates on the vine for ten to twelve days before picking — the Amarone trick, transplanted to McLaren Vale. The result is dense and hedonistic: black fruits, dark chocolate and licorice with leathery notes and a hint of black olive, matured in big old oak so the fruit stays in front. Full-bodied, plush and powerful, with generous tannins and a long finish built for cool nights and hearty food.

Shiraz drawn from two contrasting parcels: a certified-organic block on Hahn Road at Sellicks Hill for richness and plush dark fruit, and the cooler, higher home block at Clarendon for lift, structure and finesse. Gently fermented in small open fermenters for 12 to 16 days, basket pressed, then matured twelve months in French and American oak. Layers of blackberry, ripe plum and subtle spice ride velvety tannins — fruit-driven, lively and generous.

Single-vineyard Shiraz from the Kindred family's 1960s-planted Homestead vineyard on Palmers Lane, Pokolbin — a name that itself comes from the Hungarian for 'in Hell'. The low-cropped, event-free 2023 harvest gave exceptional fruit: deep crimson, dark berry aromatics, and a medium-bodied-plus palate of spicy plum and black cherry with gentle meaty, earthy tones and al-dente tannins on a long, streamlined finish. A classic Hunter style with cellaring potential of twenty years and more.
