About

Single-vineyard Shiraz from the Kindred family's 1960s-planted Homestead vineyard on Palmers Lane, Pokolbin — a name that itself comes from the Hungarian for 'in Hell'. The low-cropped, event-free 2023 harvest gave exceptional fruit: deep crimson, dark berry aromatics, and a medium-bodied-plus palate of spicy plum and black cherry with gentle meaty, earthy tones and al-dente tannins on a long, streamlined finish. A classic Hunter style with cellaring potential of twenty years and more.

Kaesler

Shiraz from Kaesler estate vines between 35 and 47 years old, fermented for a week and then rested mostly in older French oak so the fruit leads. Vibrant fruits of the forest and cassis on the nose with hints of spice box, then a supple, elegant palate of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry threaded with redcurrant and raspberry over soft, silken tannins. Drink now or hold four to five years.

Battle of Bosworth's flagship, made by cordon-cutting the vines so the certified-organic Shiraz dries and concentrates on the vine for ten to twelve days before picking — the Amarone trick, transplanted to McLaren Vale. The result is dense and hedonistic: black fruits, dark chocolate and licorice with leathery notes and a hint of black olive, matured in big old oak so the fruit stays in front. Full-bodied, plush and powerful, with generous tannins and a long finish built for cool nights and hearty food.

Every vine in the Monopole Vineyard descends from a single ancient Shiraz vine planted in 1853 in the middle of Hewitson's Old Garden Vineyard at Rowland Flat — buds grafted over many years into a vineyard of its own in the Dorrien district, resurrecting a pre-phylloxera clone. The 2022 was fermented 45% whole bunches, three weeks on skins with pump-overs, then matured 18 months in new and old French oak. Deep inky red, with dark red rose florals entwined in crimson-to-black fruit, mulberry, raspberry and plum compote, high-cacao chocolate and seamlessly integrated tannins. Winepilot rated it 97 points.

Straight Shiraz from Glenn Barry's small-batch label Tonic Wines, sourced from a vineyard on the Barossa Valley's western ridge (the 'Great West Barossa'). Whole berries macerate for around three weeks before being pressed straight to stainless steel, left on full lees, then simply racked to bottle with no oak anywhere in the process. The result is pure and fruit-driven with a savoury, almost umami edge — red and black berries over a peaty, earthy note — firmly structured with chunky, chewy tannin through a focused finish.
