About
Single vineyard Fiano from Birdwood in the Adelaide Hills, grown on alluvial clay shot through with quartz. Tight and mineral, with crackling acidity carrying grapefruit pith, pineapple, guava and kaffir lime, then a jasmine tea finish. The most structured of the Unico Zelo Fianos.
The fruit comes from Mylkappa Vineyards, a cool site just around the corner from the Unico Zelo winery at Gumeracha, near Birdwood. The soil is alluvial clay shot with quartz, and that gives the wine its name. The Fiano vines were grafted over from Sauvignon Blanc in 2015.
Brendan and Laura Carter run Unico Zelo as a husband and wife team. Brendan calls this wine their baby, the Fiano that gets the most attention in the winery. It is leaner and less waxy than their other Fianos, with more tension.
The Carters call it their special occasion Fiano, one bottle for the cellar and one for the table. It is fresh enough for oysters now and has the structure to sit with grilled fish.
Producer note
Unico Zelo is an Adelaide Hills winery whose name means unique zeal. It became a certified B Corp in 2019 and chooses grape varieties that suit each site and need little irrigation.
