About

Woodcutter's Shiraz is sourced from Torbreck's younger Barossa Valley vineyards rather than the old dry-grown vines behind the estate's flagship cuvées, hand-harvested and open-fermented with daily pump-overs before basket pressing. It's matured for 12 months in seasoned French oak barriques and foudres, then bottled unfined and unfiltered. Crimson with a black cherry core, it shows red and black fruit — dried red currant, black cherry, red plum — alongside Chinese five spice, charcuterie and white pepper, with soft, silky tannins carrying through to a long finish. Drink now or cellar 5–10 years.

Torbreck is based in Marananga, in the heart of the Barossa Valley. David Powell founded the winery in 1994, after cutting his teeth at the historic Rockford winery nearby.

He crushed his first vintage in that shed in 1995, working the property largely on his own. Torbreck takes its name from a Scottish forest where Powell once worked as a lumberjack. Woodcutter's carries that same idea into the estate's everyday range.

Serve it around 16°C, cool cellar temperature rather than fridge-cold. It pairs with most home cooking, not just red meat.

Producer note

Torbreck takes its name from a forest near Inverness, Scotland; Woodcutter's is named for the foresters who worked that rugged high country, continuing the estate's Celtic naming convention across its range.
