Polish Hill River sits higher and cooler than the rest of Clare Valley, on rocky slate and shale, not the valley floor's red loam. Growers call it the spine of Clare Riesling for a reason. The 2024 fruit came off early, ahead of the heat, to hold onto sharp acidity.
This is Vickery's first bottling from Polish Hill River after eleven years sourcing out of Watervale, and it's made with a light hand. Whole bunches go straight to press, the ferment runs cool in stainless steel, and no oak comes near it. Nothing is added to soften what the vineyard gives.
The label carries John Vickery's name, the winemaker widely credited as the driving force behind Australia's modern dry Riesling style. Pour it young with anything out of the sea, or lay a few bottles down to run for decades.
