About
Mencía is from north-west Spain (Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra) — bright, peppery, mineral. CRFT bring it to the Adelaide Hills with conviction.
CRFT is the wife-and-husband team of Candice Helbig and Frewin Ries, based at their certified-organic Arranmore property in the Piccadilly Valley. They work in small single-vineyard batches, and each wine names the site it came from.
This one crosses regions. The fruit grows in the organic Schmidt vineyard at Vine Vale in the Barossa, then travels up to the Hills for winemaking. The pair keep their hands off in the cellar, so the vineyard sets the style rather than the oak.
Expect red cherry and spice over an earthy base, medium weight, plenty of freshness. It suits charcuterie, mushroom dishes and weeknight pasta. Serve it just cool of room temperature.
