About
This 100% Syrah comes from Unico Zelo's Troppo project, which takes surplus 'unsecured' fruit from South Australian vineyards and turns it into an affordable, minimal-intervention style. The 2024 release is fruit-forward — juicy blackberry, raspberry and wild blueberry layered with cracked black pepper, violet and subtle savoury herb — with a light-to-medium body, silky tannins and bright acidity built for early, easy drinking rather than cellaring.
This Syrah is grown in the Adelaide Hills, on Peramangk Country, higher and cooler than most Barossa-style Shiraz vineyards.
Brendan Carter trained in oenology at Adelaide University after a stint at Veuve Clicquot in Champagne. He met Laura, then studying agricultural science, and the pair started Unico Zelo in 2014 inside a converted 1920s cold store in Gumeracha.
Troppo takes fruit that would otherwise go unsold across South Australia's vineyards and turns it into an easy, minimal-intervention style. Serve it lightly chilled to keep the fruit lively, alongside pizza or a simple charcuterie board.
Producer note
Troppo (Italian for 'too much') is Brendan and Laura Carter's response to surplus and unsold fruit in the wine industry: they apply Unico Zelo's minimal-intervention winemaking to more conventional grape varieties sourced from vineyards across South Australia. This Syrah comes from the Adelaide Hills, on Peramangk Country.
