This comes from Foursquare, the Barbados distillery run by Richard Seale. He is the great-grandson of Reginald Leon Seale, who founded the family firm in 1926. Nothing is added to sweeten it, which is why it stays taut where supermarket rum turns to syrup.
The spirit marries pot still and column still rum, then rests ten years in ex-bourbon casks under Barbados heat. Expect chocolate, coffee and vanilla on the nose, then black pepper, ginger and dried fruit across the palate. The odd bottle shape copies the leather flasks sailors once carried their rum in.
Pour it neat in a small glass and give it time. A few drops of water open it further.
