The Home Vineyard sits on Chinaman's Terrace in Bendigo, the warmest, driest corner of Central Otago, on a glacial terrace at 320 to 390 metres. Underneath the vines is clay over pedogenic lime, with chalk further down. That heat and dryness give Bendigo fruit a fuller, more structured pinot than the rest of the region tends to produce.
Fruit is hand-picked, destemmed, and fermented on wild yeast in small open-top tanks, hand-plunged just once per batch to keep tannin fine rather than gripping. The wine spends 17 months in French oak, only 35 percent new, then goes to bottle unfiltered.
Winemaker Paul Pujol trained at Kuentz-Bas in Alsace and Lemelson in Oregon before starting Prophet's Rock, and that pinot grounding shows in the restraint. Pour it a touch below room temperature. Duck, game or roast lamb suit a pinot built with this much structure.
