About
A Barossa Valley red led by Grenache at roughly two thirds, with Shiraz and Mataro making up the rest. The fruit comes off mature dry-grown bush vines between eighty and one hundred and twenty years old, each variety fermented on its own. Perfumed red fruit and kirsch lead, then mincemeat, leather and heavy spice, with grainy tannin running through a long finish.
Dave Powell draws these parcels from old bush vine blocks on the Barossa floor. None of that ground is irrigated, so the vines crop small and the flavour arrives concentrated rather than heavy.
After the separate ferments the parcels go into 2,400 litre French oak foudres for eighteen months before blending. A vessel that size breathes slowly and leaves very little oak flavour behind. The red fruit stays out front and the tannin reads as grain rather than polish.
Powell founded Torbreck in 1994 and now works under the name of the Marananga road he lives on. He prunes and makes the wine himself. Serve this at cool room temperature with slow roasted lamb, or anything off a charcoal grill.
Producer note
Neldner Road is Dave Powell's own label, named for the Marananga road his key vineyard sits on. He founded Torbreck in 1994 and now hunts out old dry-grown bush vine blocks across the Barossa, doing the pruning and the winemaking himself.
