About

Schiava is the local Alto Adige grape — gentle, food-friendly, properly distinct from anything else in the section. A revelation for tannin-shy drinkers.

The cellar sits inside a working Benedictine monastery in the Gries quarter of Bolzano. Brothers from Muri in Switzerland arrived in 1845 and brought their winemaking with them. The estate now farms 30 hectares, and its reds grow in the warm Bolzano basin where three rivers meet.

Schiava is the principal grape of Santa Maddalena, the vineyard hills above the city, and the abbey bottles both. It runs much lighter than their flagship Lagrein, with acidity and freshness doing the work instead of tannin.

Give it half an hour in the fridge before you open it. Then treat it like the local table wine it is: pizza, charcuterie, a weeknight pasta, or a warm afternoon with nothing to do.

Producer note

Muri-Gries is a historic Alto Adige producer based at a Benedictine abbey near Bolzano.
