About

Agiorgitiko (St George) is Greece's signature red grape. Soft tannin, red fruit, dried herb, sun-baked Mediterranean character.

Gaia Wines helped pull Greek wine into the modern era. Winemaker Yiannis Paraskevopoulos and agronomist Leon Karatsalos founded it in 1994, and today they run two wineries, one in Nemea and one on Santorini.

Notios is their everyday label. The fruit grows around Koutsi, a semi-mountainous pocket of Nemea where Gaia built its winery in 1997 at about 550 metres. Altitude matters in a warm region. Cool nights up there keep the wine lively.

Drink it lightly chilled with slow-roasted lamb, moussaka or a spread of mezze. It is built for the table rather than the cellar, so open it whenever the food is Greek and the evening is long.
