About
Gigondas is one of southern Rhône's named crus — proper power, real structure. Real southern Rhône.
A chapel to Saint Damien stands in La Baumette, the hamlet outside Gigondas where the Saurel family lives. The domaine took its name from it. Consulting winemaker Philippe Cambie came on board in 1998.
Some of the Grenache here was planted in the 1940s. Those old vines lead the blend, with Mourvèdre, Cinsaut and Syrah around them. Critics rate the domaine as a reference for classic Gigondas, full in body yet fine in the detail.
This is a bottle to open around a roast, lamb for preference. Give it a splash into the glass and ten patient minutes. Gigondas repays the wait.
