About
Koomilya is a single-vineyard McLaren Vale estate focused on heritage clones and minimal intervention. Concentrated dark fruit, fine spice, real structure, savoury depth. McLaren Vale Shiraz at its most considered.
Stephen Pannell circled this vineyard for years before he owned it. He made wine from its fruit under other labels, then bought the 35-hectare McLaren Vale property in 2012. He farms it organically and bottles it under its own name, kept apart from his S.C. Pannell range.
The 2022 season was cool and drawn out, which suited the place. The fruit was picked by hand and fermented on wild yeasts. It then rested in large, old oak barrels, so no new-barrel flavour gets between you and the site.
Roast lamb is the obvious match, beef the close second. Decant it if you open it this year. It also has the bones for a long stay in the cellar.
