Deep Woods Estate makes this under chief winemaker Julian Langworthy, one of the most awarded names in Margaret River. The fruit comes from the Septimus vineyard at Wilyabrup, in the heart of the region's cabernet country.
Cabernet sauvignon leads the blend, with malbec bringing extra flesh and colour. The 2022 shows florals and spice over deep dark fruit, with a firm wave of tannin behind it.
Open one now beside a proper steak or roast lamb, and decant it first. Better still, put a bottle somewhere dark for another year or two. The tannin will soften and the layers will open out. Buy two and taste the difference yourself.
