About
Timorasso is the rediscovered indigenous white of the Colli Tortonesi, almost extinct in the 1980s and now one of Italy's most age-worthy whites. This is 100% Timorasso off twenty-year-old vines at 300 to 350 metres, raised in steel with no oak. Stone fruit, honey, white pepper, long mineral finish.
The vineyard runs along a western slope between 300 and 350 metres, on clay over limestone. Clay holds water through a dry Piedmont summer and limestone keeps the acid high. That combination is what Timorasso needs. Picked too early the grape tastes of nothing, and picked late on the wrong soil it turns flabby.
Luca Canevaro took over his great-grandfather's estate and rebuilt it from 2016, working with his brother Stefano and their father Sandro. The ten hectares are certified organic. This wine comes off one twenty-year-old block and rests ten months on fine lees in steel. That is where the texture comes from, not from oak.
Open it a year or two out. It gains weight with age.
