Emmanuel Tessandier, a Bordeaux banker, built Château de Terrefort Lescalle in 1875 on a man-made hill above the Garonne. The estate sits at Macau, on the edge of the Margaux appellation. The vineyard disappeared in 1954 and was replanted from 1983, so the vines you taste are all modern era.
Merlot leads the blend at around 80 per cent, with Cabernet Sauvignon making up the rest. The wine ferments in temperature-controlled tanks, then spends a year in stainless steel rather than oak. That choice keeps the fruit pure and the wine ready to drink young.
Open it on a weeknight with roast meats or a good cheese. No decanting required.
