About
Cannonau is Sardinia's name for Grenache. Sun-warmed red fruit, soft tannin — Mediterranean drinking, bottled.
Cantine di Dolianova's vines grow in Parteolla, a run of hills south of Cagliari, in clayey limestone soil laid down in the Miocene. Winters here are mild and wet, summers hot and dry, the kind of swing that ripens Cannonau slowly and evenly through the season.
The winery is a cooperative, founded after the Second World War by 35 growers pooling their fruit to reach markets none of them could alone. It has grown to more than 300 families farming 1,200 hectares, still built around the island's own grapes rather than imported names.
Serve it at cellar temperature rather than fridge-cold, and put it next to lamb or something off the grill. It's built for a table, not for keeping.
