Hazy Calabrian wheat beer, soft and thirst quenching
$11.50
330ml5.1% alc.About
A wheat beer in the German mould, brewed on the Calabrian coast. Veiled straw in the glass, with a creamy head that stays put and gentle tart, fruity notes. Light enough to keep drinking on a warm afternoon.
Nirvana sits in the six strong Classiche range, the beers Cala makes every week rather than as one offs. Barley malt, wheat malt, hops and yeast go in, with spring water drawn from below the Pollino national park.
The wheat is what you notice. It gives the haze, the creamy foam that holds its shape and the soft feel across the tongue. The brewery calls this the beer of balance, and the tart edge is what keeps it drinkable rather than filling.
Serve it properly cold in a tall glass and pour with a bit of height on it, for the head. This is the one to open first on a hot day.
Producer note
Cala brews in Scalea at the top of Calabria, using water from springs in the Pollino foothills near Orsomarso. The brewery began in 2022 and its Weizen is part of the founding six.
