About
Cala ferments this one with must from Greco Bianco, the white grape grown by Antonella Lombardo on the Ionian coast of Reggio Calabria. Deep straw in the glass, with citrus, apple and a fine mineral edge. The body is generous but the finish stays fresh and savoury.
Italian Grape Ale is a beer style that takes wine must into the fermenter. Cala made a set of five, one for each Calabrian province, each with a local winery. This is the Reggio Calabria bottle, brewed with Antonella Lombardo, who started her own label in 2019 along the Riviera dei Gelsomini.
The 2024 release uses Greco Bianco must. Water, barley malt, hops, yeast and that must are the whole recipe. It pours deep straw under a fine, compact foam that holds well, and the must carries the strength up to nine percent.
Treat it more like a white wine than a beer. It deserves a wine glass, a slow hour and something at the table.
Producer note
Antonella Lombardo farms on the Ionian side of Reggio Calabria and made her first vintage in 2019. Birra Cala buys her must for the Reggio entry in its provincial grape ale series.
