330ml6.1% alc.About
A medium bodied stout brewed with fine Colombian coffee from the Águila Roja roastery. Hazelnut, cocoa and licorice come through under a creamy cappuccino coloured head. It drinks smooth and enveloping rather than heavy.
Cala brews in Scalea, on the Riviera dei Cedri in northern Calabria. The water comes from springs at the foot of the Pollino national park, the largest park in Italy. It accounts for most of what is in the bottle.
Águila Negra belongs to the Muse line, the run of beers Cala builds around one standout ingredient. Here it is coffee from Águila Roja in Colombia, a roastery founded by Peppino Sangiovanni, who came from Orsomarso, a village near the brewery. Barley and wheat malt make up the grain bill.
Serve it cool rather than fridge cold, so the coffee reads properly in the glass. It is a good one to finish a meal on.
Producer note
Birra Cala started in Scalea in 2022. Luigi De Caprio had the idea during the pandemic and his son Antonio now runs the brewery with his brothers Alfredo and Marco and his sister Marida.
