About
Bogle draws this Zinfandel from old vines in Lodi and Amador County. The nose runs to forest berries, ripe currants and raspberry, with cracked black pepper, wild juniper and dried sage and thyme behind them. The palate is rich with sour cherry, red and black berry and gentle baking spice, plus toasted coconut from fourteen months in two-year-old American oak. Bright, well-integrated acidity gives it lift, and a little berry sweetness rounds out the texture.
The Bogle family has farmed California's Sacramento River Delta for six generations, since Captain AJ Bogle arrived from Tennessee in the 1870s. Warren Bogle and his son Chris planted the family's first wine grapes in 1968 and released their own label ten years later.
This Zinfandel still comes from old, dry-farmed vines in Lodi and Amador County, some over eighty years old. Bogle now farms roughly 2,000 acres as a family business, but the old-vine blocks stay small on purpose, kept for concentration rather than volume.
Serve it at cellar temperature with barbecue, spiced sausage or a hard cheddar. It drinks well now and doesn't need decanting.
Producer note
Bogle looks for vines between 60 and 80 years old for this wine — head-trained, dry-farmed survivors that give low yields of small, concentrated clusters.
