About

Sagrantino grown on the hills around Montefalco in Umbria, handled the opposite way to tradition: a short ferment on skins, then stainless steel and cement, and no oak at all. Antonelli calls it a new reading of Montefalco's red grape — younger, fresher, more drinkable. Dense ruby in the glass, with wild berries, citrus and a lift of aromatic herbs.

The Antonelli family has farmed this single 190-hectare property in Montefalco since 1883. Sixty hectares carry vines on clay and limestone soil, spread across hilltop plots with southern and western exposure.

Contrario ferments briefly on its skins, then ages eighteen months in stainless steel and three more in cement before six months in bottle. No oak touches it at any stage, which is the point: Antonelli wanted a wine that shows Sagrantino's fruit rather than a barrel.

The estate has been fully organic since 2009, with solar power and composted waste feeding back into the vineyard. Drink Contrario young and slightly cool, alongside grilled meats or a plate of cured salumi.

Producer note

The estate is certified organic and has made Contrario since 2008. It rests 18 months in stainless steel, three more in cement, and at least six in bottle before release.
