About

Terra Sancta's Estate Pinot Noir expresses the family's Felton Road vineyard in Bannockburn. A lifted, layered nose of nutmeg, chocolate, red cherries and licorice leads into a concentrated, refined palate of vibrant red plums and cherries, licorice root and hints of sandalwood, with a lengthy finish of wild thyme and spice. Hand-picked and fermented with wild yeast, aged ten months in mixed barrique and large-format oak. Made with no additives, neither fined nor filtered.

Terra Sancta is a Pinot Noir specialist on Felton Road in Bannockburn, Central Otago, with roughly 80% of its vineyard planted to the variety and a philosophy of minimal intervention in the winery.

Pinot Noir off five blocks — Vertex, Ironstone, Chicory, Kilnside and Basalt — across 6.7 organically farmed hectares planted at over 11,000 vines per hectare, four times the Mornington norm, with yields held to 300-500 grams a vine. Fruit is chilled and destemmed with a small whole-bunch portion, wild-fermented in concrete with 25-30 days on skins, then aged eleven months in new and older French barriques. Dark cherry, strawberry, violet and anise lead into cedar, rhubarb and forest floor over velvet-smooth tannins.

The producer's own line sums it up: silky where it should be and expressive where it counts — bright cherry and plum with delicate spice and an earthy undertone, finishing soft and dry. Fermented in open vats with full malolactic fermentation and fined with pea protein rather than animal products, it comes from a family firm that was first to win a New Zealand Gold Medal for Pinot Noir back in the early 1980s and has made this wine since 1997.
